Salvation comes from God. It is initiated by Him. There is nothing anyone can do to "get" faith or to save himself. It is not by the will of man that a person is saved but by the will of God.1 That's why no one can do anything through self effort to save himself. But God does not wish that anyone would perish. To the contrary, He wants everyone to be saved.
When we were on our own, God took the initiative to find us even though we were not seeking Him at the time. He sent His angels to begin to bring about circumstances in our lives that caused us to question why we were created.2 We began to hate our lives in this world, hoping that somewhere there could be something better. As these angels continued to minister to us, we eventually started to pay attention to their leading, although we did not know what was happening to us. But all along God was drawing us to His Son, Yahshua.3
Once we began to respond, He sent a person to us who had the credibility to preach the good news because he had obeyed the gospel himself.4 He was not seeking his own glory but the glory of the One who sent him.5 When we heard the good news, He once again took the initiative to give us His faith6 as a gift to enable us to obey the gospel we were hearing. The result was that we abandoned everything to follow Him, and this forsaking all led us to the waters of baptism where we died with Him.7 Once again He took the initiative to raise us to newness of life.8 As a seal of our inheritance, He took the initiative and gave us His Holy Spirit,9 assuring us that we belonged to Him and helping us10 to be made fit to rule with Him in the coming age.11
It is such a wonderful thing to realize that God initiated a relationship with us from start to finish. This is why we love Him -- because He has proven His love for us and has enabled us to love His Son with all our heart.12 Eternal life cannot be disconnected from a relationship with Him.13 The only kind of relationship we can have with Him is like that of a husband and wife.14 We want to be married to Him some day and He is making us ready. He even provided an environment for this to happen.15 We are learning to love each other in the same way He loved us so that we can be equally yoked with Him, a suitable helper throughout eternity.
