Everyone ought to know by now that mankind is destroying the earth. Most people in America have heard all the arguments about this, all the reasons why, along with many facts and figures describing the damage. Some people try to have hope while others are hopeless. Then there are many who just don’t seem to care.
The earth is our home. We were made from it and we are sustained by it. We are deeply moved by its mysterious beauty and we are destroying it.
What is wrong with us? Who isn’t guilty? We were given the earth as a home. One look at its beauty and abundance reveals the love of our Creator. We as humans are expected to respond with love and take proper care of the earth and one another.
There are laws that are known instinctively by every human being. However, we can lose touch with these laws if we ignore them long enough. If we go against the instinctive knowledge within us then we become perverted from the way we were meant to be. This disorder within us can be reasoned away and justified within our own minds, but it still expresses itself through the fruit of our lives in one way or another. Even though nature was designed to exist in perfect order and harmony with itself, it is being destroyed. This clearly expresses the disorder within mankind who is causing the destruction. We, too, were created to exist not only in harmony with nature, but also to rule over it, bringing even greater order and beauty. Since we have a free will, each of us is responsible for doing what he knows is right. The only thing that would cause us to go against our conscience is wickedness.
So what is wrong with us? It is clear that our lifestyle is destroying the earth. Rather than simply living and caring for one another and what we’ve been given, people in the world are engaged in an all out pursuit of a life with less effort, more pleasure and a false sense of security, even though it’s all at the expense of the earth that sustains us. It doesn’t take any great intelligence or wisdom to see the utter foolishness in these ways of the world, yet the majority refuses to acknowledge this. Most people don’t want to see the truth because of an unwillingness to change their lifestyle or give up their comforts.
Over 2700 years ago someone prophesied saying:
The earth is polluted by its inhabitants; for they have disobeyed the laws, violated the statutes and broken the everlasting covenant. Therefore a curse devours the earth and those who live in it are held guilty. Therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned and few men are left. (Isaiah 24:5-6)
This warning in Isaiah is our Creator’s love for us. He wants us to escape from destruction. If we had obeyed Him from the beginning, we would be living a life right now that is beyond our highest imagination. If we had never fallen from God, then no one would have died and we would not only have turned this whole planet into a garden by now, but probably many others as well under the direction of our Creator. But even though we’ve fallen far from God, He still wants to restore us to our original purpose.
Everyone has heard that the Messiah came and paid the penalty for our sin, that penalty being death. Well, that is true and the reason He did was so we could be forgiven for every wicked thing we’ve done, cleansed from our guilt and receive a completely new life with real hope. A new life in which we are completely back under God’s authority and therefore receiving grace to become like Him. When people receive this new life they have love and care for one another. They are covenanted to one another and to God. They no longer live for themselves but for the Messiah who rescued them. Being independent and self seeking is what is causing destruction and chaos, but if we come to an end of this old life and receive Yahshua’s new life, then we can fulfill the purpose that we were created for. Then we can live for the rest of eternity in a life beyond our highest imagination.
Before man fell he was told to be fruitful and multiply, to fill the earth and subdue it, and to rule over everything on it, bringing order and care. Then, after man fell by disobeying God’s command, he was told that the ground was cursed and to work by the sweat of his brow and to eat from the fruits of his labor. The woman was told to bear increased pain in childbirth and to let her husband rule over her. You can read about this in Genesis 3:16 19. This everlasting covenant was put into man’s conscience by God at that time and it is instinctive in every man and woman who has been born since then. To go against this covenant brings destruction to ourselves and our planet. If we have been going against this covenant then we, more than anyone, are in desperate need of the forgiveness and new life found in Yahshua. He is our only hope.
We can’t possibly hope to save ourselves or this planet apart from the Messiah God sent for us. Even if everyone who cared completely repented and started living a radically different lifestyle, the multitude of people who simply don’t care would still be destroying the earth. Besides, even if we save the earth, there is still the fact that people are destroying each other and everyone faces death because we are all cut off from our Source of life. Only Yahshua can reconnect us to our Creator.
What’s wrong with us is a rotten fallen nature — an evil nature working within every one of us. An evil nature that entered into man when he fell, and has been passed on from one generation to the next. It can be covered over and refined in many ways, but it will always find another way to come out. If we think we’re good in one area, there’s always another area where we know we are doing what’s wrong. This fallen nature is in every one of us and it is expressed in the destruction of the earth, one another and our own lives. Not many people are willing to admit their responsibility for this destruction, but whoever is humble knows how they have fallen short of righteousness and they know they need mercy. They are willing to do anything to make things right.
Yahshua was willing to do anything to make things right, and He never even did anything wrong. He made the supreme sacrifice for us, even though we didn’t deserve it. Now we want to respond in a worthy way. The reason we are writing all this is because we know what it’s like to be guilty and without any real, practical hope. But now we have a real hope — Yahshua. We see the Spirit of God working to gather people together on the earth into this new life established by Yahshua. It’s His life under His authority that will bring about the fulfillment of all good things that we desire. We can come to an end of our old life by entering into a covenant with Yahshua and His people and receive a new, eternal life with power to have love and care and become like Yahshua in every way.
There is much more to say about this, but I wanted to tell you a little bit about our hope.
Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity. (Psalm 133:1)
